Glen
Grant Distillery - Area: Speyside |
|
Status: Open
Established
in 1840 the Glen Grant distillery is located at the northern
end of the Rothes village, sitting across the street from
the Caperdonich Distillery. It is the oldest distillery
in Rothes (for 30 years it was the only one). Glen Grant
is highly revered and one of the best selling Single Malts
worldwide, most notably in Italy. The water sourced for
Glen Grant and Caperdonich is shared. One acclaims the Glen
Grant burn – the other acclaims the Caperdonich burn.
The Glen Grant distillery operates traditional coal fired
stills (4 wash stills and 4 spirit stills) and following
acquisition in 1977, the stills were increased to 10. Originally
the distillery had floor maltings, although drum maltings
were installed. Glen Grant uses ex-bourbon and sherry casks
for maturation. It is smokier than the lighter Caperdonich
and is noted for a clean distinctive taste, pale gold colour
and characteristic fruity finish. Spirited, fresh and light
with a crisp quality.
